It is believed that this city was given as a part of dowry of the youngest daughter of Rukmangada. He was the chief of Sakrepatna, which now comes in Kadur taluk of Chikkamagaluru district. Further there is a locality in the town called as Hiremagalur, which was bestowed on the elder daughter.
From the point of view of tourism sector, the city has recently emerged as a major tourist hub of Karnataka. It lies in close proximity to Bangalore and thus has a major cultural influence likewise.
